The Lubbock Area Office is looking for a Construction Inspector to help oversee construction projects in the Lubbock Area and surrounding counties. Construction Inspectors perform detailed inspections and project management for highway construction projects of widely varying size and scope, from major interstate reconstruction, highway rehabilitations, bridge replacements, pedestrian upgrades, and much more. Salary Plan/Grade:
Construction Inspector I: B18 ($45,521.00 - $71,055.00/yearly)
Construction Inspector II: B19 ($48,244.00 - $76,028.00/yearly)
Construction Inspector III: B20:($51,158.00 - $81,351.00/yearly)

Position Description Description - External
This position inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties: Construction Inspector I - Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
- Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees
- Calculates payments due contractors for work completed
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with
plans and specifications. - Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety
standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades. - Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Construction Inspector II - Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
- Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with
plans and specifications. - Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety
standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades. - Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Serves as a lead worker or project leader.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Construction Inspector II - Assists Project Engineers in determining number of inspectors needed on assigned projects.
- Ensures prompt notification and/or repair of any deterioration or damage that could be hazardous to the traveling public
- Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining
cause for material problems. - Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and
related structures in accordance with plans and specifications. - Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
- Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
- Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
- Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and
construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates. - Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with
plans and specifications. - Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.
- May assist in planning and coordinating office operations.
- Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety
standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades. - Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Prepares and reviews correspondence.
- Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Serves as a lead worker or project leader.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience :
Construction Inspector I: NO experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Construction Inspector II: 1 YEAR construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent) Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Construction Inspector III: 2 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. Licenses and Certifications : Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: - Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Subject to noise.
- Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
- Medium work: Lift up to 50lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25lbs.
